Flashcards for Russ

“starfruit”
“cherry”
“banana”
“durian”
“mango” my hubby said while he shuffled the cards.

Russ was sitting right in front of him with his usual smirk on his face.
I was lazing, watching tv next to them while trying to catch quick glimpse of the two serious man at work.

fruity flashcards

I decided to test Russ by writing the words on the doddle board today.
Report Card:
1. starfruit – correct
2. cherry – correct
3. durian – incorrect (he said something like dinosaur.)
4. mango – incorrect
5. pear – correct
6. banana – correct!

I forgot to cheer for Russ. He got bored and ran away with his sister to do something else more interesting. hehe

Note:
I read somewhere that we are not suppose to test our kids when doing flashcards. But how are we going to know what to reinforce and when to add in new materials when we dunno how our child is performing? So, I decided that diagnostic test is necessary. But I strongly believe that we should not give additional stress to our child through these test. Additional stress may eventually turn the child away from learning. Learning must be fun! When is it fun? Is it fun when both your child and yourself are enjoying it.

Comic Damage

“Whack! haha..hehe” Kay say out loud and then giggles.
She topples over from laughing too hard and then continue laughing in her curled up position.

“Your daughter siow loh” I whispered to my hubby.
(should not let the kids heard my singlish!)

Calvin and Hobbes tickle Kay to death! I am not exgaerating.
Calvin and Hobbes is my FAVOURITE comic. I have read EVERY SINGLE Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. I am not kidding. It was fun to read but it’s certainly not fun watching your own daughter turn into one of the characters in Calvin and Hobbes.

“Moron!” Kay giggles
“I am Stupendous man!” she declared!
“Hey! Where did you learn that? Her daddy was shocked.

I DO NOT want a stupendous daughter. BUT I felt a bit amused and had to stop myself from laughing when Kay said that. My daughter is turning into my favourite comic character! Irony!

My hubby gave Kay a long and good father to daughter talk about words she cannot use. We decided that Calvin has to go. So sad. Bye Calvin.

Reading with Russ

I recently discovered that Russ can finally recongnise a few words.

I was getting quite bored with worksheet and decided to do something simple and easy. So, I grabbed the magnetic doodle board and wrote away. He was playing catching with his sister, yelling and screaming from the excitement of not wanting to get caught. I dunno how I did it, but managed to get his attention and asked him what’s on the board. To my surprised, he was able to read a few words. He didn’t get all correct, but good enough. Here’s some words that he can read:

1. duck,
2. bear,
3. eyes,
4. boy,
5. in,
6. ant (he read this as out),
7. mummy ( I just need to do this word),
8. ball,
9. green,
10. grey,
11. cat,
12. dog,
13. lion,
14. merlion (surprising one)

Here’s some words that he spoke gibberish:
1. banana
hmm… cannot really recall. I was really focusing on the things that he could do and was just crazily shouting cheers and clapping when he got the words right. Call me crazy, but I truly believe encouragement helps a lot in developing our children.

He wasn’t able to tell the difference between EAR and BEAR. But after correcting him last week, he managed to get it right this week.
